Fishnets at 50

"There are no ugly women, only lazy ones,” Helena Rubenstein once famously said. For anyone who is ageing (all of us), you soon realise with maturity your beauty regime requires more time and effort.  When does time and effort go too far though?  If we can’t wear fishnets at 50, are we letting the team down?

Ladies don’t sweat

“Ladies don’t sweat, we gently glow” a high school teacher reminded us one hot, summer afternoon in Brisbane many years ago.   It was a conservative catholic school and the‘English madam’ as we liked to call her did not like us running around, then piling into her classroom for afternoon geography.  This was just one of the many confusing messages we were taught when growing up, about becoming a woman and how to behave.

Times have certainly changed and women’s health is now a billion dollar industry in Australia.  But what about women’s sport?

You may have read recently about Jodhi Meares and her sudden departure from Australia’s Next Top Model.  Some of you may be thinking – who cares? Well – I find it interesting that even though Jodhi is a model and TV personality, deep down she suffers from performance anxiety – like many people.  To be a celebrity you need to really like attention, so what gives?

What went wrong?

Feminism is now a dirty word. A male friend remarked recently on the current demise of feminism, “Young women don’t understand how tough it was back in my mother’s day. She couldn’t even open a bank account without dad’s signature and if a woman wanted a drink at the local pub, her husband would bring a beer out to her in the car park, because she was not allowed to go in.”
