Women’s Health & Wellbeing
A tale from a female entrepreneur…
How I Discovered my Mojo!
A few years I ago I had a wake up call. I realized that I’d been lied to over and over again!
I was living in NYC working in a stressful job in TV development and trying to secure investment for my wellness company, Bodylove.
Totally under paid as I toiled away at 16-hour days, my only salvation from going insane during the long enduring winter was my local gym. I loved my gym because it was the only luxury I could afford and for an hour a day I felt that I was living at a resort in the Maldives.
PMS or princess?
A male friend asked me recently if PMS was just an excuse for women. "Excuse for what?" I asked. "You know, so a woman can be more…difficult, than usual."
Since when do we need an excuse? I jest, of course, but PMS is complex and an area of female health that is rife with misconceptions. It is also an area women feel embarrassed to talk about and partners can feel unsure how to broach.
I spoke with Nirala Jacobi about this. Nirala is a qualified healthcare practitioner with over 10 years experience. She recently wrote this article on PMS to help women have a more thorough understanding of what is happening in their bodies when experiencing PMS and how you can manage this both effectively and naturally.
Mums with cancer needing help…

Their mission is to support mums with young families to help them and their family cope with many of the challenges they face while undergoing treatment.
Can we create rhythm in our lives?

My work involves interviewing and talking with many women. I often find one of the biggest challenges facing modern women is being able to successfully create balance in their lives. Read the rest of this entry »
The invisible woman
Hello, my name is Kylie…
Cheap Eats in Brisbane
My family ate together almost every night when growing up. Dinner time is an important opportunity for the sharing of daily experiences and fostering relationships. As modern daily lives continue to become more hectic, often the sharing of a meal is one such valuable ritual that is left behind. Whether you’re cooking for yourself, your partner, a family or friends, designing affordable and tempting meals is also a constant challenge, even for the best home cooks.
Ladies don’t sweat
“Ladies don’t sweat, we gently glow” a high school teacher reminded us one hot, summer afternoon in Brisbane many years ago. It was a conservative catholic school and the‘English madam’ as we liked to call her did not like us running around, then piling into her classroom for afternoon geography. This was just one of the many confusing messages we were taught when growing up, about becoming a woman and how to behave.
Times have certainly changed and women’s health is now a billion dollar industry in Australia. But what about women’s sport?
That Dark Knock
Sitting down at a networking lunch recently, I found myself chatting to a delightful local artist. When she found out that I was a freelance writer, Donna asked if I had ever researched or written about female depression. Now writing about depression isn’t very sexy. After all, isn’t this blog supposed to be about empowering women?
Women and Literature
It is a regular Sunday afternoon in Brisbane and 8 women are gathered in Newstead Park for their monthly book group meeting. The group has just read Veronica Decides to Die by Paul Coelho and are gathering to discuss the book and its merits. They are surrounded by trees, beautiful weather and the table is full of wine, cheeses and assorted other treats. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon? In terms of female bonding, women joining book groups has become an increasing trend, not only here in Brisbane but throughout Australia. For many years book groups were seen as high brow, literary affairs that to the quiet observer seemed fairly intimidating. It was an activity that only literary people might participate in and unless you were very well-read and had a particularly expansive vocabulary, you may feel a little dippy attending such an event.
