A time to kick but…
The stick or the candy? Which approach gets the most out of people and the most from ourselves? Ever been accused of being too hard on yourself? I have and you probably have too – comes with the territory of trying to be superwoman and leap from tall buildings.
Still, I consider myself more of ‘reason with’ person, rather than a ‘kick butt’ kind of girl – when dealing with myself and others. Sometimes this works, other times not so well.
I spoke recently with Rosie Pecker about these differing approaches to life. Her no nonsense approach to her own life and the life of the ladies she works with in her business kickbut.com.au is very well known. Rosie is the author ‘Time to kick but’ and has a rather different approach to dealing with life and its challenges.
Nicknamed the But Kicker, Rosie accepts no excuses, copouts or buts when it comes to getting what you want! So we’re not talking about getting kicked in the butt literally, but eliminating excuses or buts in our lives. Through her experiences as a policewoman, private investigator and businesswoman, in order to not only survive but to conquer, she developed a ‘kick-but’ mentality.
I’d like you to decide. Rosie has this to say on women in business….
A Mind for Business!
What do all successful businesswomen, entrepreneurs and saleswomen have, that others don’t?
Is it that they have more intelligence, talent or good looks?
Is it that they have more time, more money or great contacts? Is it that they are just lucky?
Make no mistake, what distinguishes women who succeed from their counterparts is their unfailing belief in their ability to persisent until they achieve. They have a spirit that empowers their belief and drives them to achieve.
Inspiring individuals such as Gandhi remind us that all true power comes from within and stems from a belief. After all, Gandhi had no home, money or soldiers, he didn’t even possess a suit, yet he was able to transplant his faith into the minds of 200 million people. He was able to use what he had until he succeeded in his objective. We can do the same.
Definiteness of purpose is a necessity for achievement.
We can all focus on our perceived handicaps and listen to others list their own misgivings about our ventures, to justify our lack of success. There is no challenge in doing this, it only ensures that we do lack success and proves that we were right all along. Don’t allow perceived disadvantages or imperfections to delay your success. Catch the spirit of past pioneers. After all, Helen Keller became deaf and blind shortly after birth, yet adhered to the philosophy that ‘life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.’ Women like Helen Keller weren’t ‘advantaged,’ but she was a woman capable of anything once she put her mind to it. These women keep their focus on their goals.
Desire is a potent force that can drive us to create, yet how many women know what they actually want? Most of us can make lengthy detailed and specific lists of all that we don’t want, yet have trouble doing the same for what we do want. All successful women know exactly what they do want! ‘You’ve got to name it to claim it’ works for both what you want and what you don’t.
It’s a mind law that does not discriminate, so choose what you are and focus your energies there. Keep your eyes and thoughts focused on your target, your goals and dreams.
What you discuss habitually is what you will see evidenced in your reality. Your circumstances will reveal your habitual mindset- it will prove you right! Hopefully your everyday language reflects your belief in a prosperous and expanding business or career, if not – change your thoughts. Yes, ‘change your thoughts, change your world.’ Yes, ‘your thoughts create your reality’ – it’s good to be reminded of this.
The good news is, the power for success lies within your own hands. The most phenomenal, powerful and astounding asset that you can envision possessing…you already own. It’s available 24/7 at your fingertips. It can be an ally in this adventure of your life, or left operating by default, can wreak havoc and sabotage our best laid plans.
No-one would enter into a business planning to fail. Yet how many omit to plan for success, utilising the benefits of the female brain. Create the blueprint in the mind first, of what you wish to see realised. The thought comes before the action. All successful people – be they elite sportswomen, corporate executives or female entrepreneurs consciously and deliberately choose the thoughts that support their desires. Some women employ neuro linguistic programming (NLP) and creative visualisation as techniques of modelling patterns for excellence, to create the mental state of belief.
An accumulation of repeated thoughts creates a belief. Your beliefs will be evident and obvious in your everyday reality.
Two people can experience the exact same event, yet walk away with opposing perceptions, exposing their beliefs. During the terrorist attack of September 11 in New York, a terrified and dazed citizen spoke to a news reporter and stated, “This is not my war. Keep your war over there!” Another equally distraught man was interviewed and pleaded, “We have got to find a way of getting along, that’s better than this.” In the midst of such tragedy one view was powerless, that of a victim. The other view was powerful, acknowledging what had happened and focusing on the problem and seeking a solution.
Most businesses are a result of a solution to yesterday’s problems, affectionately termed the ‘oops evolution’ to success. Successful women in business keep their focus on the solutions, whilst developing the ability to use what they have until they get the results.
Desire and belief are required to create reality. You have the power to choose what reality that will be. You will get the results of your actions, not your intentions. So put into practice the repeated thoughts that keep you focused on your dream and maintain your belief in your ability to attain your desire. Don’t let fear divert you from your path of achievement. Keep your mind searching for evidence of your success.
Remember, whatever you look for, you’ll find. You only have room for one kind of belief – if you have thoughts of lack, then there is no room for prosperity. Make room for what you want by focusing on it, keep your mind busy with all the ways you can win.
If you are struggling, try remembering every past event where you beat the odds and back it up with evidence from other people’s lives, focusing on how they overcame obstacles. Give your mind the reference points it needs to believe that you can achieve anything that you set your mind to. Then help it prove you right by backing up your words with the corresponding actions.
Think doubt and fail, think victory and succeed. Your thoughts, your choice. I know what I’m thinking… do you?
Rosie Pekar will be speaking at the Healthy Choices Program at Carina Leagues Club in June, for more details go to www.inspirationallife.com.au/HealthyLifestyles.asp or call 1300 511 977.
What are your thoughts?
How did you feel reading this? Do you agree with Rosie? Do you take a no nonsense approach to your life? Are you a stick or candy person?

The whole time I read this I was thinking “yeah, but…”!! It’s probably just easy to make excuses for things.
I definitely do not take a no-nonsense view on life, I definitely practice “rationalising” on a daily basis (eg I rationalised the other day at the stocktake sales on at DFO…)
I think I would have to be a stick person because without that added pressure I don’t really operate very well. The end result of that is no self-motivation whatsoever. But sometimes I can make up a reason for doing something, and wha-la! Job done.
Hmmm… stick or candy – a combination of both depending on my mood I think. One thing I know I don’t respond to is rewards – I think I have RDS (that’s Reward Deficiency Syndrome – I’m sure they’ll create a medication for it at some point – apparently the part of my brain that’s supposed to be stimulated by rewards or achieving something doesn’t light up the way it should). I enjoy setting goals, I like seeing things unfold beautifully but when they’re done I simply move on to the next thing without pausing and continue – go with the flow I guess.
I love the comment in this article about everything we need we already have – our most powerful asset is within us. As a small business owner I sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that I need more of something – more knowledge, more money, more clients etc. etc. This is great thing to affirm to myself of when those moments arise. I love the idea that creativity can solve anything. Thanks for the reminder!
What a great article! This is someting I have always believed in. As I was reading I was inspired to grab paper and pen and update my list of what I want. I agree, its far easier to specify what you dont want, but this is just focusing the wrong energy. Thanks for the reminder!
